It is perhaps good to mention some initial
reactions to openSUSE
11.1. openSUSE 11.1 is fairly stable and does exude confidence.
The package management system is quite a bit different from
Ubuntu's but does have some GUI front-ends. In this case, there is
not really a need to fiddle with a file like /etc/apt/sources.list
to add in repositories as there is a YaST control panel for
that.
Some tools familiar to users of Ubuntu are not necessarily packaged
for RPM-style package systems like what openSUSE uses. This means
that tools such as gpodder
are not directly available. While Banshee exists as a media player,
in some cases it is easier to use Liferea as a podcatcher
instead.
One nice point is that sshfs is easier to set
up under openSUSE 11.1 than has been experienced with Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex.
Using sshfs in conjunction with nanoblogger allows this
blog to be updated somewhat directly. Previously the blog was
updated in a local copy and then uploaded using gftp.
More reactions and reflections are planned to be forthcoming in
LISTen #53.
